Maaike den Dunnen is a singer doing many different things. Her sound and style are consistent, but her interests are not. Den Dunnen is leading and taking part in various projects, mostly performing her original music.

This group performs originals and arrangements by the pen of Den Dunnen, in a style that respects the traditional and contemporary jazz- (and pop-) repertoire, while also allowing its originality to shine strongly. During their concerts you could be surprised by a 90’s “house-hit”, a megaphone, or a jazz arrangement made out of a Billy Joel cover…Their vast appeal by both jazz fans and general music-lovers comes from the fact that they incorporate a high musical intelligence and integrity, while making the music accessible through lyricism, humor, and an incredibly infectious energy. In its original line-up, the group features some of the highlights on the European/American jazz-scene:

Thomas Kugi (AT) – Saxophones

Renato Chicco (IT, SI) – Piano

Milan Nikolic (RS) – Bass

Mario Gonzi (AT) – Drums

Dutch band:

Tom Beek – Saxophones

Karel Boehlee – Piano

Frans van Geest – Bass

Joost van Schaik – Drums

Originally from New York City, this singer-pianist has been touring all over the globe and is a highlight on today’s international jazz-scene. Both skilled in singing, playing the piano, composing and arranging (in different ways and different levels), Den Dunnen and DeRose explore all possible combinations of the above, which makes every concert a unique and original experience. With Jazzin’ Je Moerstaal (translated: Jazzin’ Your Mother Tongue), Maaike den Dunnen creates an unusual crossover between jazz and the Dutch language. Her original songs with self-written Dutch lyrics are full jazz elements such as improvisation, rich harmony, and surprising rhythms. In this way this repertoire creates a new context for the Dutch language, which is mostly being used in different genres such as cabaret and singer-songwriting. Jazz on the other hand, often considered ‘intellectual’, now gets an extremely storytelling character that speaks directly to every Dutch listener: jazz lover or not.

Currently, the repertoire of Jazzin’ Je Moerstaal is mostly being performed in a duo.

Apart from her work as a singer, Maaike works as a vocal teacher. Before receiving her bachelor’s and master’s degree in singing, she studied for 3 years at the Education In Music Department at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague. Moreover, she gained a lot of experience teaching singing lessons both privately and in music schools. Currently, Maaike is teaching private students at home (also for duo’s and small groups) and at Zang & Co. She teaches group lessons and workshops at the Kroepoekfabriek and Erasmus University. As a choir conductor she works at the Charles Vermeer Zanginstituut.

Apart from her own projects, Den Dunnen now and then appears as a guest or soloist at other concerts. Her knowledge of the jazz tradition and flexibility have brought her into various big band projects, such as the ‘European Jazz Orchestra 2009’ (EU), ‘European Jazz Academy’ (DE) and ‘RTV Big Band’ (Slovenia).

Ok let’s face it…jazz is not the most commercial kind of music. All the projects you’ve seen on this page are made for an audience who is willing to listen and be touched, surprised or intellectually challenged by this music. However, if you’re looking for background music, just to make your party/dinner/wedding a little more special…Here’s another option: easy listening music for informal settings.
